Pitchperfect Compost processes Club pitches and cuttings using a process called ‘windrow’ composting. This is generally undertaken in an open-air environment where the materials can break down in the presence of oxygen. The feedstock (pitch, cuttings and locally sourced green waste) is shredded, mixed and placed into windrows along a non permeable surface. A ‘windrow’ is triangular in cross-section and between 1.5 and 3.0 metres in height, varying in length. The windrows are turned on a regular basis to improve oxygen content, distribute heat to regulate temperature and to distribute moisture. The composting process takes, on average, sixteen weeks, depending on maturity requirements. The material is turned by machines throughout this period.

The last part of the process involves screening the compost to take out any oversize materials. This also removes a proportion of the root-zone material used as a basis for the pitch itself. Some of this material remains in Pitchperfect Compost’s soil improver product and, along with other beneficial components, provides for enhanced soil structure.
